SMC: Sheet Moulding Compound - known in Germany as resin mat or Prepreg.

SMC is a moulding compound made on the basis of glass-fibre reinforced unsaturated polyester resin. Ranking with the
Duroplasts SMC comes rolled up flat on coils weighing about 0.3 to 0.5 tonnes..

Five SMC types are standardised according to DIN 16913. In addition there are a number of non-standardised compounds tailored to the application.

SMC is shipped
ready for processing to structural parts by warm or hot press moulding or diecasting.

The industrial application of SMC dates back to the beginnings of the sixties, when the excellent electrical characteristics of this material were used for cable distribution boxes and electrical insulation.
In the beginnings of the seventies SMC conquered the automotive industry. For example, SMC was used for the shock absorber of Renault R5, which was one of the major applications in Europe. Along with shock absorbers for the types R11, R 14 and other parts Renault processed 50 to 60 t/day maximum.

Overview of SMC Applications:

Cars and Trucks:
Shock absorbers, oil troughs, cylinder head covers, engine bonnets, luggage boot lids, casings of the engine compartment, protective layers against stones...

General:
House connection boxes, cable distribution boxes, interior linings, window frames, safety cut-outs, LS-switches, exterior linings, sliding valves, insulating plates, call boxes, ground plates of recycling containers, casings for industrial vacuum cleaners...
